The Top 5 Signs It’s Time For “Empty Nesters” To Move

How to know it's time to move or buy a new home

If you’re an “empty nester”, and your kids are no longer living at home, it may be time for you to find a new home, and move to a new area. But how do you know when it’s time to sell your family home, and move somewhere else? Here are a few of the most common signs.

1. Your House Is (Way) Too Big

That 5-bedroom house may have made sense when you had four kids living in it, but today, you don’t really need it. The extra bedrooms are going to waste, and you’re paying a huge property tax rate on a home that’s simply too big for you.

If this is the case, it may be a good idea to downsize your living situation, and move into a retirement community, or just into a smaller home that’s a bit more appropriate for your new, child-free lifestyle.

2. You’re Sick Of The Weather

Once your children have left the nest, it’s easier to move – you don’t have to think about the process of changing schools, and other such issues. So if the snowy winter has finally gotten on your nerves, and you’re ready to move to a warmer climate, this is the perfect time to do so!

3. You Want To Be Closer To Your Kids

Another reason to move might be to be closer to your adult children – especially if they have begun having their own kids. If they’ve put up roots somewhere far away from your home, you may want to move closer, so that you can help with childcare – or simply be within driving distance of your children.

4. You’re Having Trouble Managing Your Home

A larger home means more chores. More rooms to vacuum, more gutters to clean, a larger lawn to cut – if you’re having trouble staying on top of things, moving to a smaller house may be the right choice for you.

5. You’re About To Retire

Chances are that, if your children are all adults and have moved away, you’re not too far from retirement age.

If you’re retiring, you’re no longer reliant on a job to make ends meet, so you can move anywhere you want! You may also want to live in a home that’s more accessible – say, with fewer staircases, and with safety rails in the bedroom – so that you can stay at home as you age, and be safe in your home.

In addition, moving to a more inexpensive home helps you stretch your retirement savings, as you won’t be paying nearly as much for your mortgage, or for maintenance costs.
